REFLEXOLOGY

What is Dr. Manzanares definition of reflexology?

I propose a definition of Reflexology  that can explain the mechanisms and structures that intervene in the process.
So Reflexology  can be defined as a reflex technique, based on the neurobiochemical action that is produced by stimulating a specific area of the foot and that has a general or partial repercussion in the organism (body).
This is possible because each structure and organ of human body has a foot area where is reflected, from this moment this area is named reflex area (example: stomach reflex area, liver reflex area, …). The reflex arch involves different structures:
   -Receptors or nerve endings .
   -Receptors or sensory nerves.
   -Spinal cord – spinothalamic tract.
   -Reticular formation.
   -Thalamus, Hypothalamus, Cerebral cortex.
-Spinal cord - reticulum –spinal fasciculi
   -Vegetative nervous system.

Notice that this definition has considered the implicated anatomic structures and the mechanisms that caused the conduction and beginning of the stimulus caused when doing a reflexology massage..This remarks the neuro biochemical character of Reflexology.
For a full comprehension of Reflexology we will study one by one structures involved..

RECEPTORS

When a reflexologist explores a foot, he can feel a swollen part that can be named “deposit”. In the anglo-saxon culture the usual name they use  is “crystal”, but  from now on I prefer to call them “deposits”.
These deposits are located in the hypodermis, where the subcutaneous  cellular tissue is located.
If we observe a section of the skin we can differentiate the followings layers:

   1) Epidermis, which includes the tactile and painful sensations through the Meisner Corpuscles (tactile sensation), Meckel disks (tactile sensation) and the free endings  (pain).

   2) Dermis, where we can find the stimulus that relate to temperature. (Rufini Corpuscles (heat) and Kraure Corpurcles (cold).

   3) Hypodermis, where the existent receptors are extremely sensitive to pressure (Pacini and Golgi). At the hypodermis level is where the subcutaneous cellular tissue is located and it is  also where we can find the “deposits” or “crystals”  (that reflects the imbalance of the organ

Student Testimonials:

In September 2004, I began the Reflexology Certification Program at the Center for Healing Arts & Massage. Charlotte Irwin was my instructor and mentor. In the first day of class, I knew that it was not an accident, or my doing, that led me to Charlotte's Reflexology Program. God had a wonderful plan for me and He was the one that led me to Charlotte and her Reflexology Program. During the program, Charlotte spent a weekend teaching us about starting a business and shared her experience of starting her business. It was this weekend that showed me that I was closer to my dream of having my own business than I imagined. The advice and tips Charlotte shared with us in this business class gave me the confidence and motivation to start my own business.
